New App Review: NetFlixs on the Small Screen

Submitted by JDiazAsper on 08/27/2010 – 7:28 am3 Comments

I think this is the app that will get me to buy an iPad! The new iPad that folks think with be announced on the September 1, Apple event (more on that over at Wikinews). Either way the Netflix app is cool.

Here is what you get:

  • It’s free with a NetFlix Account, starting at $8.99
  • Amazing collection of movies and TV shows that is growing
  • Full Video Control – pause, fast forward, etc.
  • Image quality is just beautiful on the iPhone 4
  • Works on iPhone, iPad and iTouch
  • Load time and performance was great

I did check the iTunes store reviews at 2000+, the biggest complaint from the NetFlik crowd seemed the inabilty to manage “the disc queue”.  Add that one to the next upgrade, por favor!

I do think NetFlik missed the boat on using this to drive new members.   If you are not a member, App tells you to go visit to sign-up. Problem is if you click on that on your iPhone, the site has not been optimized for a web browser. I would think in this case they could have gone for a fully enabled mobile touch site. I would have thrown in a special promo page with a free trail and speedy registration.
This is a nice opportunity to get new folks, use it people! Make the final mile easy!

But that’s just cranky marketing gal talk, and I think this is a no-brainer for NetFlix junkies or wannabe junkies.

Who is watching videos on their cell phones?

I’m not sure if I would take advantage of Netflix on an iPhone/iPod touch unless I’m really desperate to watch something (or entertain my kids). The screen is just so small!

Netflix on the iPad, on the other hand, is terrific! There’s something so intimate about holding a movie in your hands, cuddling up on the couch or in bed to watch something after the girls are asleep. I’ve been using it for months now, with no issues at all.

I do agree that they’re not doing a good job of trying to encourage new membership. A free one-month trial would get people hooked for sure!

I love this app. I have used it many times since it was released! A lil headphone action and you can stay up watching crap in bed all night long ;-) Shhhhh!
