RIM (our Blackberry friends) Acquires CellMania

Submitted by JDiazAsper on 08/25/2010 – 7:34 amOne Comment

RIM is in serious catch-up mode with Apple & Andriod on sales momentum and innovation. So they went shopping and bought CellMania, an app store developer that powers app stores for Orange, Boost Mobile and others.

Here are some reactions across the web to the news:

“RIM may be the leading smartphone maker in North American, but its mobile application store does not get nearly as much love as Apple’s App Store or Google’s Android Market. Cellmania makes the software that runs mobile application stores for carriers like Sprint and Orange, and RIM may be looking to use some of its expertise inside BlackBerry App World.” Tom Krazit over at CNET.

“The deal comes as RIM struggles to regain its footing in the increasingly competitive smartphone market and amid recent difficulties. The company’s newest product, the BlackBerry Torch, has started with tepid sales. In addition, several countries have asked RIM to allow them to monitor email on the BlackBerry network, a development that has kindled privacy concerns.” Francessa Freeman at Wall Street Journal

Cellmania has mostly worked with carriers to bring ringtones, wallpapers, video, and other mobile content to their subscribers. One can only conclude that it is likely RIM will use Cellmania to beef up the BlackBerry App World. The potential in App World is huge, but it lacks in many ways when compared to Apple App Store or Android Marketplace.” LouiV at BlackBerry Leaks

The general consesus so far is a better app store coming to you loyal BlackBerry Fans! I think it”s a great idea for RIM to go shopping. I would say they should shop some more and make some aggressive moves before coverage becomes less of an issue for the iPhone and to halt Android’s amazing growth.

What do you think? More shopping for in order for RIM? Amazing App store for BlackBerry Fans?
